Anxiety Treatment and Counselling

  • Anxiety counselling primarily involves talking to a therapist about your experiences, thoughts, and feelings related to anxiety.

  • Personalized approach:

The specific techniques and strategies used in therapy are tailored to your individual needs and the type of anxiety you are experiencing.

  • Focus on understanding and management:

The goal is to help you understand why you experience anxiety, develop coping skills to manage it, and learn how to challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety.

  • Safe and supportive environment:

Therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your fears and anxieties, build self-awareness, and work towards positive change.

What it can help with:

  • Understanding anxiety:

Counselling helps you identify the specific situations, thoughts, or feelings that trigger your anxiety.

  • Developing coping strategies:

You will learn techniques to manage anxiety symptoms, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, or cognitive reframing.

  • Challenging negative thoughts:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques help you identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety.

  • Reducing avoidance behaviors:

Therapy can help you gradually face situations that trigger your anxiety, reducing avoidance and building confidence.

  • Improving overall well-being:

By addressing anxiety, counselling can lead to improved mood, better sleep, enhanced relationships, and increased overall quality of life.

Common techniques used in anxiety counselling:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

This therapy helps you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety. â€‹

  • Mindfulness-based techniques:

These techniques help you focus on the present moment, reducing rumination on the past or future worries.

  • Relaxation techniques:

Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and other relaxation exercises can help reduce physical symptoms of anxiety.

  • Techniques:

This can include exploring feelings about the loss, processing memories, developing a new identity, and finding ways to honor the deceased.

  • When it's needed:

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy)

EMDR is a highly effective therapeutic modality aimed at relieving psychological distress of many kinds: PTSD, grief, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, stress pain, and childhood trauma.

EMDR is limited in the need for clients to talk about a distressing event, as it harnesses the ability of the brain to heal itself when distressing memories are processed.

EMDR therapy uses a structured eight-phase approach that includes:

  • Phase 1: History-taking

  • Phase 2: Preparing the client

  • Phase 3: Assessing the target memory

  • Phases 4-7: Processing the memory to adaptive resolution

  • Phase 8: Evaluating treatment results

Processing of a specific memory is generally completed within one to three 90-minute sessions. EMDR therapy differs from other trauma-focused treatments in that it does not include extended exposure to the distressing memory, detailed descriptions of the trauma, challenging of dysfunctional beliefs or homework assignments.
